allan,
Good question! We've done a bunch of similar conferences (including FOWA / London) so we have a pretty good sense of the activity curve. There will be heavy activity (hundreds of users, hundreds of comments, thousands of connections, tens of thousands of page views), but the activity won't pick up until just before the conference.
For the months leading up to the conference the network acts as a directory so that people can see who's coming. This is especially useful to people who are trying to make a decision about whether to come. It's good for you to fill out your profile now if that encourages more of the people you want to meet to register for the conference.
Most people aren't organized enough to be thinking two months out. So we'll send a reminder email out to all the registrants ten days before the conference. That's when people start arranging meetings and start discussing topics related to the conference.
I love this idea of a social network before a conference. I think its great to spur meet-ups. However I am a bit disappointed with the amount of people participating. How many people are expected at FOWA this year?
If you want to talk to someone try leaving a comment on their profile. You can even talk to yourself.
