Ever since I first learned of the Burning Man event in an article in Wired Magazine (www.wired.com) sometime in the early 90s, I've told myself that I would make it out there. It's now 2008, the event started yesterday, and I'm no closer to packing up my tent and survival gear and heading out to the Black Rock Desert.
If you are not familiar with the event, well, it can't be explained. Check out www.burningman.com. Any attempt to explain it will be lost here. However, the interesting thing is that over the years the self-proclaimed anti-corporate, anti-establishment event has become, well, part of the establishment. Here's an example, they now charge an entrance fee of nearly $300.00. No tickets are sold at the gate, but must be purchased online or at select ticket outlets before the event. Also, while the Burning Man website proclaims that it is a "commerce-free event" (see FAQs on www.burningman.com), someone forgot to tell Paper Man, LLC the legal entity that filed and obtained the following federal trademark registration:
