Moodle made easy

June 27th, 2008 Posted by: l.dewis

No the navigation hasn’t been sorted but if you are a teacher and you like the idea of running you’re own virtual learning environment with ready-to-go tools like discussion forums and learning journals, quizzes and student progress tracking, then its just got easier. Well I say just got easier, but I’m not sure how long ninehub has been around. I suspect not that long because having the word hub in your name seems to be a 2007-8 thing (with my favourite Hub being the ‘place to go to make things happen’ although you can get a better pizza at The Hub MK).

As far as I can tell Ninehub manages the hosting and installation of Moodle on their servers and gives anyone a free Moodle account… which must be music to the ears of anyone who is deafened by words like ‘installation’ and ’server’ or who work in a school that won’t set up a Moodle server. Teachers who have taken up the offer (and don’t mind Google ads appearing next to their content which is perhaps the way ninehub are hoping to finance this) include MrsMoodle and iteachr. I was amused to see the treacletart site is about Business Studies (sold it to me) and that EdTechTalk must still be talking and not doing as they have no current courses.

So who is ninehub and why are they doing this? And can anyone put me in touch so I can ask them how we can encourage these teachers to make some of their materials openly available… or are they already in the OER movement (or OER-M as its started to become referred to)? I notice http://sando.ninehub.com/ are OER supporters and connected to the UNESCO OER Community.

Hi! I’m Ferdy, founder of NineHub.com - Free Moodle Hosting. We provide NineHub.com, initially, for my clients but later we decided to make it open for public. We are web development company based in Melbourne Australia.

Yes, we hope the site can finance itself with small intrusive ads. But soon we’ll provide paid service, for Moodlers who want dedicated Moodle server with ftp, own domain, etc.

Feel free to drop me email at ferdy@ninehub.com. Happy Moodling.

    Cheers.

    Thanks for your comments–

I am a university instructor in Trinidad and Tobago who along with a couple of colleagues use the services of ninehub.com to bring our students an educational experience via the Internet in a private capacity. “Sando” is not an official University site. My students are free to use this site for their Reading courses. It is a good experience for them since Moodle is a fine system. So far ninehub is a reliable host for a basic fee. If I am not mistaken all Moodle hosting companies work like this–offering packages.
With regard to our/my connections with the UNESCO Open Training resource site– this too is good for Caribbean people as are all OER sites. So much material is freely available to help in completing one’s training or education. One day I hope ninehub will assist us in putting up an OER site with Caribbean -related material in the areas of History, Language and Literacy and all relevant fields.

    Stay well– bajoseph/Trinidad and Tobago
